Walk into any agricultural machinery market and you will see a dozen things all called a sprayer. They are not variations of one product. They are different machines solving different problems, and the names get used loosely enough that it is easy to buy the wrong one.

This is a plain guide to the main types and what each is genuinely built for.

Manual knapsack sprayer

A back-mounted tank, usually 16 litres, with a hand lever driving a small pump. Pressure comes entirely from your arm. Simple, cheap, repairable anywhere, and still the most common sprayer in India for good reason.

Best for small plots, nurseries and spot treatment. The limitation is consistency: as you tire, pressure and droplet size change, and so does the dose reaching the plant.

Battery-operated knapsack sprayer

Same shape, but a rechargeable battery drives an electric pump. Pressure stays constant while the charge lasts, which makes coverage far more even than a manual unit. Most models keep the hand lever as a backup.

Best for one to three acres of low-growing crops. See the battery sprayer range for typical tank and battery combinations.

Knapsack power sprayer

This is where the naming confuses people. A knapsack power sprayer is carried on the back like a knapsack, but it holds a small petrol engine driving a pump — usually a two-stroke or a compact four-stroke. It produces far more pressure than a battery unit while staying portable.

Best for terraced land, scattered plots and places a trolley cannot reach. Our knapsack power sprayers cover this category.

HTP piston power sprayer

HTP means high tension pressure. A piston pump, driven by an engine or motor, generates the pressure needed to push spray into a tall canopy or through several nozzles at once. The pump sits on a frame or trolley and the operator works from a long hose.

This is the workhorse for orchards, plantations, cotton and sugarcane. Pumps are usually rated by the number of pistons — single, duplex and triplex — with more pistons giving smoother, higher output. The piston power sprayer range and the JP Kissan HTP pump series both sit here.

Portable and complete power sprayer sets

A portable power sprayer is an HTP pump packaged on a light frame for one person to shift between plots. A complete power sprayer set is the pump supplied together with its engine, hose, spray gun and fittings, so nothing has to be matched by the buyer.

If you are buying your first engine-driven sprayer, a complete set removes the most common mistake we see, which is a good pump paired with an underpowered engine or an undersized hose.

Mist blower

A mist blower uses a high-velocity air stream to carry very fine droplets into a canopy, rather than relying on liquid pressure alone. It covers ground quickly and uses less water per acre.

It suits dense plantations and pest control where penetration matters. It is less suitable where drift is a concern, because fine droplets travel further in wind.

Choosing between them

Three questions settle most cases:

  • How tall is the tallest thing you spray? Anything above head height needs pressure, which means an HTP unit.
  • How far is the furthest point from where the pump can stand? That decides hose length, and hose length affects the pump size you need.
  • How many days a season will it run? Heavy seasonal use justifies an engine-driven machine; occasional use rarely does.

Whatever type you settle on, match the nozzle to the job as well — the wrong nozzle will waste chemical on the right machine. Our guide to spray guns and nozzles covers the options, and the full spray pump range shows how the categories compare side by side.

Healthy Crops, A Brighter Future With the right care and reliable equipment, you can overcome seasonal challenges and ensure a better harvest.
