A manual earth auger has no engine to fuel or maintain and costs a fraction of a powered unit. For a few dozen holes a season in workable soil it is the sensible tool, and it goes anywhere without fuel.
A hand auger works by body weight and rotation rather than engine torque, so it is safer in stony ground where a powered bit would bind and twist. As a manual hole digger it is slower but far more controllable.
Post hole digger manual work suits fencing on soft to medium soil. Drill bits are available at 80, 100, 120, 150, 200 and 300 mm and fit both the manual and the powered head, so auger tools bought for one carry over to the other.
