These two names are used interchangeably in the market, which leads to a lot of disappointed buyers. The machines overlap, but they are built for different depths of work and different sizes of land.
Power weeder
A lighter walk-behind machine with rotary blades that work the top layer of soil. Its job is inter-cultivation: breaking the crust, removing weeds between standing rows, mixing in fertiliser and preparing seedbeds in soil that is already broken.
Typical characteristics: smaller engine, lighter frame, narrower working width, shallower working depth, and enough manoeuvrability to turn at the end of a short row or work between orchard trees.

Power tiller
A heavier machine with a larger engine, designed for primary tillage — breaking untouched ground, working deeper, and pulling implements. Many can take a trailer, a pump attachment or other equipment, which makes them a general-purpose power source on the farm rather than a single-purpose tool.
Typical characteristics: larger engine, greater weight (which is what allows the blades to bite), wider working width, deeper working depth, and higher fuel consumption.
Best for: larger fields, hard or previously untilled ground, paddy puddling, and farms that want one engine to do several jobs. Our 7 HP power tiller sits in this class.
The practical differences
- Depth. A weeder works the surface. A tiller works deep enough for primary land preparation.
- Weight. Weight is what lets a machine cut into hard ground. A light machine on hard soil will skate across the surface instead of digging in.
- Manoeuvrability. A weeder turns in a tight space. A tiller needs room, and on a small plot you will spend more time turning than working.
- Operator effort. A weeder can be handled by most people. A tiller in hard ground is physically demanding.
- Versatility. A tiller usually accepts attachments. A weeder is normally a dedicated tool.
Choosing by land
- Under one acre, vegetables or orchard — power weeder, every time.
- One to three acres, mostly inter-cultivation — power weeder, possibly the largest in the class.
- Above three acres, or breaking new ground — power tiller.
- Need to haul as well as till — power tiller with a trailer attachment.
- Terraced or hilly land — lighter machine, because weight you have to control on a slope is a hazard rather than an advantage.
Petrol or diesel?
Petrol engines are lighter, quieter, cheaper to buy and easier to start. Diesel engines cost more up front, are heavier, and return better torque and lower fuel cost per hour on sustained heavy work.
The practical rule: if the machine runs a few hours a week, petrol is the sensible choice. If it runs most of the day through the season, diesel usually repays the difference.
Blades wear, and worn blades cost you fuel
Rotary blades are consumables. As the leading edge rounds off, the machine has to be pushed harder to achieve the same depth, which burns fuel and loads the gearbox. Rotate or replace blades as a set, never individually, or the rotor runs unbalanced.
Check the gear oil level at the interval in your manual. The gearbox on these machines takes constant shock load, and running it low is how an inexpensive service job becomes an expensive rebuild.
Before you buy
Measure your narrowest row spacing and the smallest turning space on the plot. Those two numbers rule out more machines than engine size does, and they are the two things buyers most often forget to check.
